If I could, I would go out for lunch far more often than I do. It's such a treat, and a great way to catch up with a girlfriend and relax in the middle of the afternoon. Lucky for me, I had that opportunity yesterday and decided to take my gal pal jb for a little birthday lunch. We ended up at Cava on 1560 Yonge st. I had been before, but only for dinner, and I was impressed. But never for lunch.
There were only a few tables so we had our choice of where to sit.
Which in someways is kind of nice, especially because I wanted to hear
all the dirty details of JB's birthday party the night before (which
sadly I could not attend..)
So over a couple of glasses of Cava
Bruit Pinot Noir Codorniu, I got caught up on all the exciting details
of my sassy downtown birthday girl, and she got to hear all about Lulu
"latest-s".
They have lots of great options for lunch, the menu being similar to the dinner menu but with a few nice twists.
They have a lunch "express" for $18 which changes daily. 6 options, all looked fantastic.
But we both decided to order from the regular menu.
I
had a delicious chilled spring pea soup with a sea scallop ceviche. It
was excellent. I can still taste the velvety, smooth fresh peas, I
think keffir lime leaf, mint and scallop. truly worth going there just
for the soup.
Then I had the yellow fin tuna tatare, with some
frisee and balsamic, with some nice crunchy taro root chips. Also very
tasty, though a little heavy on the shallots so I had a bit of an
unpleasant lingering aftertaste. But that's probably just me, as I'm
not really big on raw onion.
But the perfectly chilled glass of Rueda Verdejo Herederos Del Marques De Riscal 2006 was so complimentary, to both dishes.
So great in fact that I went directly to the LCBO after lunch to pick up a few bottles of it.
My lovely lunch companion had the Watercress & Roasted beet Salad with Valdeon & Marcona almonds
and the very popular Broiled, cider glazed Sablefish with black rice and escarole.
Which I actually had the last time I was there, and it is excellent.
so there you have it, a really great lunch or dinner spot.
2.5 G's
Great food
Good service
Good
vibe (though I still feel it's in need of something when it comes to
the decor...it's nice but could use some art work or mirrors or better
yet, nicer fabric on the benches...)
but that's just my 2 cents.
