The first days of winter always turn my mind regretfully to its exact opposite - the glorious days of summer. The thing I miss the most when the chill sets in is the way the warm air of summer caresses you, moving over your skin like an actual touch. The way it begs you to strip down to as little as you canto enjoy its embrace, leaving modesty at the doorstep of July. In what other season can you enjoy lying bare, while a slight breeze plays over you, raising only the slightest sensation, perhaps a tiny frisson, but stopping short of goose bumps or a shiver?

Pumpkinpie and I are reading more complex tales these days, longer stories and classic fairy tales being favourite picks more and more often. These are things I'd like to have more of on our shelves, so I have a bunch of this stuff on my Christmas wishlist for her, and have bought a handful of them in paperback myself - a nice benefit of classics. (I am , in general, a snob about hardcover picture books, but the $10 each that I save by starting to get over it means I can have more books, so I'm getting there! The smaller price could also make them nice for stocking items or daily Hannukah gifties.) Some are favourite takes on standard tales, some are newer stories with a fairy-tale quality to them, but are are wonderful for sharing. Here are some of our recent favourites that we hope to find in Santa's bag!

We all know that children say some incredibly entertaining things. It is only appropriate that celebrities that entertain us would likely have some great wisdom to share. I have found ten random quotes that have given me something to ponder...

In August, I took the time to talk about leaving kids in cars in the summer heat. Fast forward to this weekend, where a bylaw enforcement officer in Ottawa is trying to be a nice guy (an anomaly itself) by looking inside a vehicle to check for a parking slip that may have fallen off the dash. Instead of seeing a slip of paper, he sees a small hand move. Minutes later, at around 11:20am, police arrive and remove two children, an infant and a toddler, from the freezing car.

If I were making a movie out of Hot Daddy's and my reunion last night, it would be part romance, part comedy and part triple-X porn.
The evening began very successfully, with a lovely rack of lamb and a nice merlot. After catching up on Heroes (it's getting better again, yay!) we moved it upstairs to the jacuzzi. We poured a couple glasses of port, lit a dozen candles, and had a leisurely soak.

I think I'm a relatively hot mama.
Key word: relatively.
The older I get, the more I realize that attractiveness is all relative and that realization is what allows me to feel good about myself despite the fact that I will never, ever look as good in a bikini as I did 15 years ago.

Life has been pretty intense in the hot household lately. I have been incredibly busy and the awesome Hot Daddy has really picked up the slack. He's been doing all of the cooking and grocery shopping, a lot of childcare, and housework too. All this, and he's barely getting any.

When you read this, most likely, I will be sitting at Thanksgiving dinner. Yes, I'm Canadian, and yes, our thanksgiving was over a month ago. But I will be partaking in a longstanding American ritual.
In Canada, we never really celebrate thanksgiving. I mean, it's dinner, but it does not hold the significance that it does in the United States. I think, here in Canada, there's a feeling that thanksgiving is not a "Jewish" holiday, and so, for those of us that are Jewish, it doesn't really count. It's like Christmas - an extra day off without the pressure. In fact, when I asked my husband about it, he told me that they never celebrated Thanksgiving when he was growing up, that it was a Christian holiday. To say I was surprised is putting it mildly.

The old cliche of "staying together for the sake of the kids" is being proven to have an effect opposite to the desired one. Researchers have found that a nuclear family isn't necessarily what's best for children, despite the long-held belief that children in single parent homes fair poorly when compared to those living in traditional homes with a mother and father. According to the research, financial standing and love yield more positive results.

I've become a bit of a Food Network junkie over the past few months.
Sometimes I'm looking for inspiration, other times I just love all the drama that can happen in a professional kitchen.
Who knew?
Gordan Ramsay's kitchen nightmares, The Top Chef, The Iron Chef (talk about drama!) Jamie's Kitchen, and one of my favorites...
The Heat.
