Hey! Do you remember paint-by-number kits? Retro, yes, but fun? I was
in the dollar store and found a few this week. My kids jumped on them –
they’ve finished them and in the interest of garnering more peace and
quiet, I’ve turned to the internet. But then I made a delightful
discovery - with the ease of good printers and a photo software
program, you can turn anything into a paint by number. Watch this!
- Get a photo or picture and scan it onto your computer. Drawings with only a few colors work better but experiment and see what you’re comfortable with.
- Run your picture through your photo software. Make it black and white. Some programs have extra features that will allow you to make your photo a drawing
- Print it off. Now, using your original as a color guide, mark the spaces on the printed black and white copy with numbers. At the corner of the page, print out what your guide will be, i.e. 1=red, so on.
See?

1=pink 2=white 3=yellow (also words Goodbye Yellow Brick Road)
4=green (also words Elton John) 5=brown 6=light yellow 7=orange
(Of course, you could make it more detailed. But even things with three colors are neat.)

1=red, 2=blue, 3=white
Wrap ‘em up and give with the appropriate colors of paint or markers.
Now that you’ve planned presents for people, how does a snack sound?
How about some turon? (funny name, yummy taste)
Vietnamese Banana Spring Rolls (turon)
6 very ripe bananas, cut in half lengthwise
block of medium cheddar
1/2 c. of dark brown sugar
12 spring roll wrappers
1-1/2 c. of cooking oil
Lay out the spring roll wrappers.
Slice the cheese into 12 equal pieces.
Put 1/2 banana on a spring roll wrapper. Place a slice of cheese on top.
Sprinkle with brown sugar. Wrap filling. Take the side nearest you and start rolling away from you. Halfway through, fold side flaps inward and continue rolling. (Like a little burrito)
Wet edges of wrapper to seal. Repeat process until all wrappers are filled. Over medium-high heat, deep fry the banana spring rolls until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
Serve at once.
Mmm, fried bananas with cheese.
Ooey gooey goodness. Very good with a sprinkle of curry powder.
Also good to snack on when doing paint-by-number kits. Don’t forget the napkins!

Really? Yummy? hum...should i trust you THAT much?

I am taking all of my Led Zep album covers and making them into paint by numbers for Bumper. Enough of the Dora, this girl is going to learn her numbers and colours the super cool way. Rock and Roll!
