and Rosey no longer wants to cut paper or use the glue or sprinkle glitter on anything and everything. No modeling clay, no
Now, I get the rolled eyes. 'I do that at school.'
Now, she wants to cook. I don't mind the company in the kitchen, but I do miss my crazy glitter queen. But having kids is all about change (and don't I sound like an American coming up on the election now??) and so...
So we make things like pancakes and sweet rolls and (ohh, practicing those beginner knife skills) chopping up carrots and celery for soups....
and cookies. R loves cookies.
And when I bake cookies? Rosey's latent craft (mad) skillz come to the forefront.
So far we've had cookies decorated with cinnamon swirls and cookies with candied cherries. Cookies cut out to look like shapes and drop cookies. Cookies covered in frosting and cookies shut away in a tin for a few days to mellow and turn chewy, and plain old chocolate chip. Oatmeal raisin, snickerdoodles, and gingersnaps.
But yesterday she was restless and wanted something colorful. Something fun. Something sweet. That would take a long time.
(It was rainy and blowy yesterday - no playing outdoors. Bad weather for mommies.)
So we painted cookies.
First, we made a basic sugar cookie dough and used cookie cutters to cut it into shapes. Then we set them out on cookie sheets, and made our watercolor cookie paint.
Each color needs:
an egg yolk
and 1/4 teaspoon evaporated milk
add a few drops of food coloring, stir, and paint on the cookies using clean paintbrushes.
Bake as your cookie recipe dictates, and be ready to ooh and aah over the masterpieces that come out of your oven!
There is another version that uses baked and cooled cookies, and corn syrup (about a teaspoon per color) and food coloring to make a shiny, almost stained-glass appearing paint. These are beautiful, but take a looong time to dry. (Definitely longer than my four year old could wait!)
Now, if you'll 'scuse me, I need to go watch the election.
With some coffee and cookies.

Now, how smart is that? Painting cookies. And the election, one week left to go. Watching Obama's infomercial tonight? It is absolutely baffling to me that McCain is still in the running at all! A littel frightening really. So crossing fingers.

There's a way of colouring sugar crystals (I don't know how but I know you can) which could maybe resurrect your crazy glitter girl...
