Now, before you get all up in my Showbiz, let me just say right off the bat that Mama Drama is well aware how to spell the word "hottie". In fact, Mama Drama lurves the hotties, much to the dismay of her Husband (Hi Honey! You're smokin' hot!). But this week, Mama Drama has denied herself a free pass to salivate over young Hollywood beefcakes, in favour of sharing with you her idea of the Men to Watch in Hollywood.
Forget the young men hot off the hunk farm. Most of them may have awfully pretty faces, but not much to offer. Actors, writers, producers, the guys I'm about to list are the real talent - and sometimes the beauty too. When you see their names associated with a project, you just know that it's going to be something special. A hands-down Must-See. So, without further ado, I bring you Hollywood Hot-Ys: Mama Drama Edition:
1. Neil Patrick Harris: Don't tell me you don't remember Doogie Howser, MD..? NPH (as he is lovingly referred to) has come a long way since being the youngest doctor ever. He's a real Hollywood "It" Guy - currently starring in the hilarious How I Met Your Mother, and hand-picked by Joss Whedon to star in the the web series Dr Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog. NPH had a wicked funny bone, and truly great comedic timing. If you don't watch HIMYM, you may remember having seen him lately in Harold and Kumar as a parody of himself. But wait! There's more. He does stage too. Not only did he star in Broadway heavy-hitters Rent and Cabaret, but he also acted in the show that Mama Drama is going to be appearing in next: Proof. AND we both did the Wizard of Oz as our very first show. NPH is Mama Drama's homeboy.
2. Johnny Depp: Mama Drama first fell in love with this man as Officer Tom Handsome Hanson on 21 Jump Street. Totally had a shrine to him...and then he kind of fell off the raidar. But he came back in full force, didn't he. Mama Drama hearts Depp because although he could rest on his very good looks, and has had a bum movie here or there, he always makes interesting choices in characters and acting style: Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd, Willy Wonka. Hell, even the ridiculous Pirates of the Caribbean was elevated to an almost decent movie, solely thanks to him. Next up for Depp: the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland. Could there be a more perfect person for that role?
3. Robert Downey Jr: A fantastic actor - shame about the drugs. A lot of people underestimate Downey because he is often involved with fluffy chick-flicks (and because he is often in jail..), but Mama Drama believes he may just be one of the truly great actors of our time. His portrayal of Charlie Chaplin was so remarkable, that the movies remains a Mama Drama favourite. His turn as Larry Paul on Ally McBeal singlehandedly saved that show from jumping the shark. He even has the ability to raise an otherwise bland Iron Man to watchable quality. His easy humour and quick wit is enjoyable in every role. Next up for Downey: Sherlock Holmes. You know where Mama Drama will be when that one hits the theatres.
4. J.J. Abrams: This man wears many hats, but where he serves Mama Drama best is as a film and television producer. If you don't know who he is, you should - Lost, Alias, Fringe, Felicity, Cloverfield - he's been involved in so many hot projects that it's just mind-boggling. If this man offers you a job, you drop whaever you're doing and answer: YES! Next up for Abrams is a remake of Star Trek that promises to be the movie of the year. Have you seen the cast for this thing? It's ridiculous: Zachary Quinto as Spock, Simon Pegg as Scotty, John Cho as Sulu...the list goes on. It's Nerd Nirvana. I'm there.
5. Joss Whedon: If you're a regular Mama Drama reader (Are you? If so, lemme know. I could really use some Love this week..) you will know that I think Joss Whedon has created the GREATEST TELEVISION OF ALL TIME: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly. Funny, imaginative, witty and interesting, this writer has the Midas Touch. I really don't know what to say about him other than, if you haven't watched his trifecta, what - exactly - are you doing with you tube time? And the New Year is gonna bring us fans some sweet, sweet lovin' in the form of a new Whedon show: Dollhouse. It stars Eliza Dushku (Faith from Buffy) as a young woman who can be imprinted with "personality packages" in order to fulfill the fantasies of a very rich clientele. It promises to be sizzlin'. No word of a lie.
There are numerous Hot-Ys out there in Hollywoodland, but these are the few and the proud who made Mama Drama's shortlist. Who made yours?

I'm totally with MM - Alan Ball, but also Jeremy Podeswa, who directed episodes of Six Feet Under, Carnivale, Rome, The Tudors, lots of other stuff, and is a Canuck to boot.
