So what are you doing tonight? A good book? A glass of wine and some tv? Well, I’ll tell you what I’m doing – I’m spending the night with some peelers. Yeah, that’s what I said. And I’m going to tart it up, too. That’s right; things might get a little fleshy, and I’m definitely going to be turning up the heat. Oh, and I will undoubtedly be ending the night with a little pot. I’m totally getting sauced.
Applesauced, that is.
Scoff if you will, but I have made over 6 litres so far, and it’s very satisfying. And it’s easy as pie. And I have about 10 kilos of apples still sitting on my kitchen floor, at least half of which the baby has taken a bite out of, so I had better get to the rest. We’re going through it super quickly, and I love giving friends and family little half-litre mason jars full of saucy goodness. And have I mentioned the smell? Oh. My. Goodness. Is there anything that smells better than simmering applesauce, cinnamon greeting you every time you walk into the house? I know it’s only November, but man, the smell is really helping me get my festive on. If only I could bottle that smell. Oh, hey…!
The Super, Super Easiest Way To Make Applesauce EVER Step 1: Buy a whole bunch of apples, whatever kind you like. I went with Cortland.
Step 2: Wash then peel about 20 apples (or however many will fit in your pot)
Step 3: Find something good on tv and make a little workstation within view of your show.
Step 4: Coarsely chop the apples – pieces can be pretty chunky.
Step 5: Throw all of your chopped apples into your slow cooker.
Step 6: Sprinkle the apples generously with cinnamon (if desired. I desire.)
Step 7: Turn the slow cooker on low and set it for 8 hours.
Step 8: Go to bed because your show is over, your apples are prepared and it’s late.
Step 9: (next day): gently mush your apples right in the slow cooker stone (they will be so soft you’ll hardly have to touch them).
Step 10: Line up your pretty glass mason jars (or reused yogurt tubs, whatever), and fill ‘em up.
Step 11: Accept all the lovely compliments you’ll get for the next week regarding how delicious your house smells.

Betcha thought I’d be talking about apples, didn’t you? Nah, you already know about what a super food an apple is (5 grams of fibre! Flavonoids! Antioxidants!), so here’s a few reasons you should keep the cinnamon in the applesauce: 2 tsp of cinnamon offers 10% of your daily iron needs; it is a powerful ally in controlling blood sugar levels by regulating the speed at which food is digested, reducing the rise in blood sugar after meals, and gals, it has been shown to have anti-microbial properties, aiding in the relief of pesky yeast infections.

I am a slow cooker junkie and this is awesome. My least favourite part was the stove top and this eliminates it. I'm a master peeler legend in my own mind. Though I do drool over those counter top peel and core devices, they make life so easy. Thank you :)

That opening paragraph was da bomb.
I've recently started making baked apples, and cutting them up in small chunks for the baby. He loves them. And the smell in the house is divine, you're right.

I can personally vouch the yumminess of this sauce, and the maker, of coures! But I did not know that about cinnamon... No wonder I love it so.
