What a difference a year makes.
Remember last year when I wrote in this space about how the exchange of slutty shoes is somewhat of a Christmas tradition between my mom and !?
Well, it was. Well, it still is I guess, which is to say I did receive a very lovely pair of boots from my mother this year. And, as per usual, I did pick them out myself.
So I guess I have no one but myself to blame for fearing that, when stacked against the slutty boots and shoes of years past, those boots are a symbol of all the things that made 2008 such a sucky year.
I mean, they are perfectly fine boots.
They are actually the first practical pair of winter boots I have owned in 15 years - no joke. My usual 10-minute walk from the parking lot to my office this morning was the most comfortable I have ever had.
But when I read last year's New Year's Shooting for Hip column in which I wrote about how important it was for me to indulge myself in at least one pair of outrageously impractical footwear a year, I wondered what exactly had happened to my spirit of fun in 2008.
It was a bad year to be sure. There were work worries and husband worries and just general worries. There is no question that one year later I feel much more than one year older.
And that's probably why I need slutty boots more than ever.
I mean, look at slutty boots circa 2004...
Or slutty boots circa 2005... (see those scuffs - proof that these babies saw lotsa action)
I do not know what 2009 will bring, but despite my comfortable commute this morning, I think I may have gotten off on the wrong foot. (pun intended)
Perhaps difficult times are the times in which we need whimsy the most. Perhaps choosing a more traditionally slutty pair of shoes for my Christmas gift this year would have been a sign of optimism, a sign of commitment to positivity.
And perhaps optimism and positivity are what I need the most to make 2009 a better year.
It can't be sure of course. But my mom also got me a Winners gift card for Christmas that's burning a hole in my pocket.
And I'm pretty sure that there's a pair of truly slutty shoes out there calling my name.

Comfort is good...but, 2004 & 2005. THEY will get you in trouble. Oh, YES, they WILL.

Oh, girl. I'm so with you. I bought waterproof boots this year. Gawd, where has my youth gone?

I sometimes worry about the increasing dowdiness of my footwear wardrobe - but the truth is, with little kids I can't LET myself have a whole wardrobe of fun, impractical shoes because at any given time, I might have to run after them. Sad but true.

Last year I bought some practical Cougars as well as something a little less momish. I hope. This year, I'm looking for somehting spicy. But no heels, because I can't rock em.

I got a pair of boots like that last year. They're great. Slutty is a state of mind anyway. :)

I understand the need for sexay shoes. I say go buy 'em for yourself (and be thankful for the comfy boots for those walks to work!).

I can't wait to see them. I was eyeing some pretty slutty boots myself this year. Maybe I'll go back and pick them up...

I got a pair of comfortable (non-heeled) boots for Christmas last year and they were the best gift I've gotten in a long time. I love walking in the snow and feeling like I'm wearing warm, toasty slippers. I'll be a slut again in the spring.
